What Hat Are You Wearing?

We all wear a lot of hats (or uniforms). For most of us, this means we switch hats multiple times each day – often without even thinking about it.  Some days, hours or minutes, we simply need to wear a particular hat.  It’s important for us to be thoughtful about the hats that adorn our heads, whether intentional or not.

When driving my (Paula) young children to school, an argument invariably broke out, and I’d say, “Don’t make me put on my black and white [referees] hat and uniform.” What we “wear” may vary depending on the circumstances.  The reasons we wear them range from practical, celebratory, to fashion-related to a variety of other reasons. In our professional lives, the particular hat depends on the situation, on a given day, or the time and place.

The hat we wear may signal our loyalty to an employer or a sports team. Hats offer us a way to express our personalities. Just as there are countless styles and designs of hats, each person is unique and has their own way of expressing themselves.

Wearing a hat with confidence can enhance our presence and command attention. Hats teach us about the power of self-assurance and how projecting confidence can influence the way others perceive us.

Hats also have benefits that align with leadership qualities. For example, a wide-brimmed hat might be worn for protection from the elements, whether it’s shielding us from the sun, rain or cold. These hats remind us of the importance of being prepared and taking proactive measures to safeguard ourselves against adversity.

An often-used meme is of a mean looking woman with a green face wearing a witch’s hat.  The accompanying text says, “Some days, you just have to put on the hat, to remind them who they are dealing with.” This is not a hat we aspire to wear; be judicious about putting on this hat. It’s only for dire situations.

Metaphorically, pulling a rabbit out of the hat refers to coming up with a clever solution or accomplishing something extraordinary when faced with a challenge or obstacle. It implies the ability to produce an unexpected and impressive outcome, often at the last minute – when all other options seem to have been exhausted. This phrase is commonly used in contexts where someone manages to achieve success or overcome a problem in a surprising or unconventional manner. Have you managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat recently?

Wearing a hat to express yourself allows you to showcase your individuality, creativity, and personality.  Whether it’s through style, cultural symbolism, mood, or functionality, hats provide a versatile and fashionable means of self-expression.

Authentic leaders wear a hat that expresses their individuality. A cheerful and outgoing personality might wear a bright hat, while a sophisticated and confident leader may wear a minimalist, slick design – think fascinators at the Kentucky Derby or a Royal wedding.  They wear it practically and figuratively, in the way they present themselves. Be aware – others see the hats we wear – sometimes more clearly than we see them. Be intentional.  Ensure that the one you’re wearing represents the YOU that you intend.
